Foothill’s Austin Overn stays on track in bid to be state athlete of the year

Austin Overn wants to be known as the best athlete at Foothill High School this school year.

And best athlete in Orange County.

“Best athlete in the state, too,” Overn said.

To solidify his candidacy for such honors awarded by CalHiSports.com and others, Overn made his track and field debut last Saturday in the 100 meters at the Irvine Invitational. He is an outstanding senior center fielder on the Foothill baseball team, so Overn has practiced the 100 only a couple of times.

Overn ran it in 10.73.

That broke the school record. It’s also the second-fastest time this season in Orange County, behind the 10.71 of Servite senior Max Thomas who is a CIF champion sprinter, and the sixth-best in the state.

“That was my first ever track meet,” Overn said. “I didn’t realize how many people show up for that. There was like 2,000 people there.”

He still is playing baseball. Overn, who signed with USC for baseball, is batting .351 with team highs of four triples and 11 stolen bases for the Knights who are No. 8 in the Orange County top 25.

Overn this past fall led the Foothill in receptions with 68 after having not played football his sophomore and junior years. He had 20 touchdown receptions, ran for four touchdowns and passed for another for the Knights who were 10-2.

Overn is entered in the 100 at the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational meet Saturday at Laguna Beach High. But he won’t compete. Foothill’s baseball team plays Gahr on Saturday.

His track pursuits were not planned.

“I was going to do track last year,” Overn said, “but it was a COVID year and I was already playing basketball. This year was more of a last-minute thing.”

The previous Foothill school record of 10.9 in the 100 was shared by three, including Chad Concolino who equaled the mark in 1998. Like Overn, Concolino was an excellent multi-sport athlete who played football and baseball at Foothill. Concolino went on to play baseball at UCLA.

Also like Overn, Concolino didn’t practice the 100 much, but just ran it between baseball games and practices. Concolino, a real estate agent in Laguna Beach, did not know he held the Foothill 100 record until told about it Thursday.

He loved hearing about Overn.

“If somebody is going to break my record,” Concolino said, “I’m glad it was a guy coming out of the dugout who did it.”

NOTES

Sam Gooding is the new offensive coordinator for Servite football. He has coached at various levels, most recently as offensive line coach at the University of Wyoming.

Brea Olinda hired Jae Kim as its varsity football head coach. Kim coached last season at Don Lugo/Chino which finished 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the San Antonio League. He replaces Robb Perrance, who retired after coaching the Wildcats for 20 seasons.

And speaking of football, we have some 2022 schedules news to share …

Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson is struggling as usual to find nonleague opponents; Week 0 (Aug. 19-21) is open at the moment, with an out-of-state team possibly traveling west to fill the date; at Bishop Gorman on Aug. 26 or 27; and at Centennial/Corona the following week. The Monarchs nonleague schedule concludes by playing a to-be-announced opponent as one of two games of the “Trinity League Classic” in which St. John Bosco also plays a TBA opponent.

Corona del Mar’s five-game nonleague schedule concludes with home games at Newport Harbor High’s Davidson Field against San Clemente on Sept. 9 and San Juan Hills on Sept. 16. The Sea Kings are home for Sunset League games against Los Alamitos on Oct. 7 and Edison on Oct. 28, the final Friday of the regular season.
