Ronaldo Damus helped lead Orange County Soccer Club to last season’s USL Championship final.

The Haitian international scored 18 goals in all competitions and was the MVP in the finals, scoring two goals.

Damus, 22, is taking the next step in his career as he was transferred Thursday to GIF Sundsvall in the Swedish top division.

Terms of the transfer were not released, but it was reported to be six-figure transfer fee with a sell-on, which would give OCSC a percentage of any secondary transfer.

OSCC president and general manager Oliver Wyss called the move a “massive landmark” for the club.

“I’m very thankful to Orange County SC for all of the opportunities they have given me to help me improve my skills on and off the pitch,” Damus said. “To be given the chance to make my professional debut and win a championship last year along with winning the MVP, it was more than I can imagine.

“Now transferring to play in Europe is a dream come true. Those moments will never be forgotten, but will always be used as a tool for the future while playing on the stage in Europe.”

This is Orange County’s third international transfer. In 2020, the club moved Aaron Cervantes to Rangers FC in Scotland and Bryang Kayo to VFL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga.

“He (Ronaldo) had a breakout season last season and we received very good interest, both domestically and internationally,” Wyss said. “Transfers take awhile and it was important to make sure we could get the future sell-on, which can be valuable for our club.”

Damus joined OCSC from North Texas SC from the USL League One. In 2019, he was the league’s Golden Boot winner and scored 21 goals in 35 appearances in two seasons.

He made his international debut with the Haitian national team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“It really is the perfect story,” Wyss said. “He came to Orange County because he wanted to fulfill his dream of going to Europe and knew we could develop him and have him prepared for that. This is exactly what we want to achieve with our young players. Ronaldo will be deeply missed.”

Orange County SC opened the season Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks. The club will host Rio Grande Valley FC in Saturday’s home opener at Championship Soccer Stadium at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine.
