El Pollo Loco adds shredded beef birria to its menu

El Pollo Loco is serving shredded beef birria for a limited time in tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

Birria is a meaty soup from the Mexican state of Jalisco, and El Pollo Loco will serve its birria items with a cup of broth for dipping.

Birria has become something of a fad on social media and is served in many taquerias. Some of them serve goat meat, which is traditional.

El Pollo Loco claims to be the first fast casual chain to add birria to its menu, although it will only be available until June 1, according to a news release.

Norms, the diner chain, recently added birria items to its breakfast menu for a limited time.

Serving beef is a departure for El Pollo Loco. The Costa Mesa-based chain specializes in fire-grilled chicken and hasn’t served beef for more than a decade. It added steak to its menu in 2010 but withdrew it in 2011.
