El Dorado baseball’s golden ticket could be its outstanding pitching

El Dorado means “The Golden” in Spanish.

The pitching for the El Dorado High baseball team has been just that this season – golden.

Senior right-hander Josh Pugh is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA over four appearances. He played on the El Dorado boys basketball team that advanced to the CIF Southern Section quarterfinals, so Pugh got a late start on his baseball season. He signed with Concordia of Irvine for baseball.

Junior left-hander Nathan Huy is 3-1 with a 1.48 ERA. He has 20 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings.

Garvey Rumary, also a junior lefty, is 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20 innings. His losses were to St. John Bosco, the No. 1 team in the CIF-SS Division 3 rankings, and Southlake Carroll of Texas, which was 8-2 going into this week.

El Dorado (8-4), No. 9 in the Orange County top 25, has given up only seven runs over its last nine games.

“It’s nice to have three No. 1-type of pitchers,” said El Dorado coach Matt Lucas. “They are all different guys in how they pitch, but they are all very capable.”

THIS WEEK

A look at some of the big games this week:

JSerra (No. 2 in the Orange County top 25) at No. 6 Santa Margarita, Wednesday, 3:15 p.m. JSerra was 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the Trinity League through Monday. Santa Margarita (8-0) had not played a league game until the Eagles played at JSerra on Tuesday evening.

No. 4 Servite vs. No. 1 Orange Lutheran at Hart Park, Wednesday, 7 p.m. Servite (5-0, 0-0) might have its best team in a long time. Orange Lutheran (7-1, 2-1) shut out JSerra twice last week.

No. 9 El Dorado at No. 7 Villa Park, Friday, 3:15 p.m. It is the Crestview League opener for both. El Dorado was 8-4 going into this week. No. 7 Villa Park was 9-1 through Monday.

TOURNAMENTS

The Ryan Lemmon Foundation Spring Break tournament runs April 2 through April 6 at the Great Park in Irvine and Ryan Lemmon Stadium. The 30-team tournament includes O.C. No. 7 Villa Park, No. 11 Newport Harbor, No. 15 Trabuco Hills, No. 17 Dana Hills, No. 21 San Juan Hills, No. 22 Brea Olinda and No. 23 Beckman. The tournament is a fundraiser for the foundation that organizes and manages youth sports events, so an admission fee is required of spectators.

The National Classic is April 4-7 at various locations, mostly at El Dorado High and Amerige Park. No. 3 Cypress, No. 6 Santa Margarita and No. 9 El Dorado are in that one. Also entered are St. John Bosco and South Hills, ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division 4.
