Even before Assemblyman James Ramos introduced legislation to eliminate the word “squaw” from geographic features and public places across California, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland had already established a process for reviewing and renaming such locations.

Haaland, who is of American Indian descent and a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, announced in November that she had established a process to review and rename 650 geographic areas nationwide that slurred American Indians, 114 of them in California and 10 of them in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

“Racist terms have no place in our vernacular or on our federal lands. Our nation’s lands and waters should be places to celebrate the outdoors and our shared cultural heritage — not to perpetuate the legacies of oppression,” Haaland said at the time in a statement.

She issued two orders. Secretarial Order 3404 establishes a federal task force to find replacement names for geographic features on federal lands bearing the “squaw” term. Secretarial Order 3405 creates a federal advisory committee to broadly solicit, review, and recommend changes to other derogatory geographic and federal land unit names.

Following is a list of locations in Riverside and San Bernardino counties with the term “squaw” that are on Halaand’s list to be renamed:

Squaw Hill in Riverside County
Squaw Mountain in Riverside County
Squaw Tank in Riverside County (2)
Squaw Tank Dam in Riverside County
Squaw Mountain in San Bernardino County
Squaw Peak in San Bernardino County
Squaw Spring in San Bernardino County
Squaw Spring Well in San Bernardino County
Squaw Tit Summit in San Bernardino County
