CYPRESS >> The Cypress baseball team broke out the bats once again in a 6-5 nonleague victory over Ocean View on Friday at Cypress High School.
The Centurions (7-2-2), who are ranked No. 5 in Orange County, have scored 29 runs over the past three games.
Cypress scored four of their six runs against the No. 11 Seahawks (6-4) with two outs.
Starting pitcher Zack Ocampo allowed a run on four hits over five innings to earn the victory.
The sophomore left-hander, who was brought up directly from the freshman to the varsity squad last season, set down the side in order three times and retired seven in a row during one stretch.
Ocampo threw a complete-game victory over Servite in his second varsity outing as a freshman and he has been on the varsity roster ever since, Cypress coach John Weber said.
“He can mix and match pitches,” Weber said. “He’s not overwhelming on any of the counts, but he does a good job and he did a good job of battling today.”
The Centurions got on the board in their first at-bat, when designated hitter Matthew Morrell hit a two-out single and No. 4 hitter Nick Montgomery followed with a double to drive in Morrell, giving Cypress a 1-0 lead.
Leadoff hitter Abbrie Covarrubias, who went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, hit a two-run triple with two outs in the second, and Luke Matlock followed with a triple to drive in Covarrubias to make the score 4-0.
In the fifth, Montgomery hit a double to drive in his second run and John Short drove singled home a run to give the Centurions a 6-1 lead.
As it turned out, the Centurions needed those insurance runs because the Seahawks came up in the seventh and sent 10 batters to the plate while it scored four runs.
The Seahawks had the bases loaded with two outs when Matlock, who came in to pitch in the inning, retired Cole Kenrich on a ground out to short to end the game.

“That’s a good group,” Weber said of the Seahawks. “They are not going to roll over. They are not going to quit. That was part of my conversation afterwards with our guys. You have to be ready to compete at all times.
Spencer Johnson, Landon Runyan, Seth Churchwell and Evyn Lewis each had an RBI for the Seahawks.
