Since the start of the boys wrestling season, El Dorado coach Steve Lawson has had the highest ofexpectations for his 106-pound sophomore, Isaiah Quintero.

Quintero met his coach’s expectations as well as his own by finishing first at the CIF State WrestlingChampionships on Saturday at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Quintero, who has been wrestling since age 4, dominated the entire six minutes of his 10-1 victory overWalnut’s Ronnie Ramirez in the championship match.

“He has been wrestling in state and national level tournaments his whole life,” Lawson said. “He’s a cutabove.

“The expectation with most kids, is that you work your butt off for four years and you’re hopingto place in top three in CIF (Southern Section). The expectation with him from the get-go is to finish topthree in the state.”

Quintero had a first-round bye and pinned his next two opponents, before facing his toughest matchesin the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The sophomore got through the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over Poway’s Edwin Sierra andadvanced to the finals with a 3-1 victory over Isiah Cortez in the semifinals.

The 160-pound championship match between Calvary Chapel’s Luke Gayer and Temecula Valley’sManuel Gaitan was among the most anticipated and arguably the best bout of the finals.

The match needed three overtime periods to decide, with Gaitan scoring on an escape with 13 secondsleft in the third overtime to defeat Gayer, 2-1.
