Up-and-coming isn’t the only description anymore for Capistrano Valley Christian’s girls basketball program.

The Eagles earned the title of champion on Saturday night.

Senior guard Halle Sii scored 25 points and sophomore guard Mariah Streeter had 21 to help the top-seeded Eagles capture their first CIF-SS championship by defeating host Desert Christian Academy of Bermuda Dunes 70-24 in the Division 5AA final.

Sii added 12 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals while Streeter made five 3-pointers.

Freshman Cayla Mercadel added 10 points and and six rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (17-6).

Second-year coach Dominic Freeman guided the Eagles to the title after reviving a program that didn’t play in 2019-20. The Eagles also made their first finals appearance since 1997.

“I’m just really happy for the girls and the school,” Freeman said. “The girls left everything out there tonight and I’m very proud of them.”

Capistrano Valley Christian will compete in the CIF State SoCal regionals, which start Tuesday. The pairings will be announced Sunday.
