Newport Harbor’s girls water polo team capped a dominating season by making more history on Saturday.
The Sailors captured their first CIF State SoCal title by defeating league rival Laguna Beach 9-2 in the Division I final at Newport Harbor High.
Newport Harbor (29-1), which won the inaugural CIF-SS Open Division title last weekend, led 6-0 going into the fourth period and claimed its 22nd consecutive match.
The Sailors also won their fifth consecutive meeting against the Breakers (27-7) to finish the teams’ season series with a 5-1 advantage. Newport Harbor defeated Laguna Beach 11-6 in the Open final.
Morgan Netherton led Newport Harbor with three goals while fellow seniors Taylor Smith and Alex Love added two apiece. Junior goalie Anna Reed made seven saves to anchor the Sailors’ defense.
Juniors Jordan Schneider and Lauren Short each scored once for Laguna Beach.
