Man charged, accused of race-motivated stun gun threat in Huntington Beach

SANTA ANA — A 42-year-old convicted burglar was charged Wednesday with making a racially motivated threat with a stun gun in Huntington Beach.

Tremaine Jatari Sowell who is Black, was accused of brandishing a stun gun at a 54-year-old White man on Saturday while making comments about the victim’s race, according to Jennifer Carey of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Sowell pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana to a felony count of violation of civil rights with violent injury, a misdemeanor count of possessing a stun gun with a prior conviction and a misdemeanor count of violation of civil rights.

Sowell was ordered to return to court March 9 for a pretrial hearing in the West Justice Center in Westminster.

Sowell was convicted of burglary in September 2010 and possession of drugs for sale in March 2013.
