THE GAME: After taking a quick two-run lead in the first inning, the Angels lost to the Cleveland Guardians, 5-3, on Friday in Goodyear, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander Reid Detmers gave up two runs in four innings, but he could have easily allowed none if he had been quicker to cover first base on a potential inning-ending double play. He gave up two hits, one a wind-blown double. Detmers struck out five and walked two in a 64-pitch outing. He said he felt better in the second inning. “I felt like I was trying to force mechanics just a little bit,” Detmers said, “and then as the game went on, the more comfortable I felt and it kind of smoothed out a little bit. The last two innings felt really good.” In the fourth inning, Detmers retired the side in order, with two strikeouts, on 11 pitches. Detmers said he’s still trying to mix in his changeup. He threw seven of them, including two called strikes, one whiff. … Right-hander Shaun Anderson entered in a tie game in the fifth and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk. … Right-hander Chase Silseth gave up a run and walked two in his inning.

HITTING REPORT: Adam Frazier led off the game with a double into the gap in right-center. Frazier added a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning. Frazier is hitting .357 (5 for 14) this spring. Jeimer Candelario pulled a ground ball down the right field line for an RBI double, and he took third on an error. He also singled. Candelario was subsequently thrown out at third when he tried to take an extra base on a ground ball to the right side. A non-roster invitee, Candelario has a 1.013 OPS this spring. He’s hitting .316 (6 for 19) with three doubles and a homer. Candelario hit another homer that doesn’t count in the statistics in a game against Team Italy. … Christian Moore was hitless in four at-bats, although he moved a runner with a grounder. Moore is hitting .261 (6 for 23) this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: The Angels had a chance to turn a 3-6-1 double play to escape a second-inning jam, but Detmers didn’t get to the bag. Candelario, the first baseman, tried to get back after making the throw to second, but he didn’t touch the base. One run scored on that play, and then a second run scored when right fielder Nelson Rada failed to catch a fly ball that the wind pushed away from him. … On another play affected by the wind, Sanchez and left fielder Bryan Martinez collided, allowing a blooper to fall in shallow left field.
