Volunteers helped over the weekend with the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Starting from the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, they walked around Upper Newport Bay making note of the birds they spotted.

The nature preserve is a popular stop for birds during their winter migration and is home to several rare or endangered species.

The  Audubon Society sponsors the national count that uses “citizen science” to help with conservation and protection efforts.
