Boys basketball playoffs: Marina knocks off Trabuco Hills; Mater Dei loses to Harvard-Westlake

Marina relied on its defense Friday to get a 49-41 home win over Trabuco Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA boys basketball playoffs.

The Vikings, No. 14 in the Orange County top 25, held the Mustangs to five points in the first quarter and four points in the third.

Eric Hodgkins made two 3-pointers for Marina (19-4) and Bohdi Armstrong made a 3 to provide the clutch baskets in the fourth quarter.

Marina plays host to No. 11 Foothill in the 2AA second round Tuesday.

In the Open Division:

Harvard-Westlake 67, Mater Dei 45: The visiting Monarchs (25-3) lost to the Wolverines (22-2) in the first game of pool play in Pool B. Mater Dei plays at Sierra Canyon in its second pool play game Tuesday.

In Division 1:

Fairmont Prep 76, Murrieta Valley 49: Chol Deng scored 25 points, Myles Che scored 18 and the Huskies (17-6) won at home.  Fairmont Prep plays at St. John Bosco in the second round Tuesday.

JSerra 63, Oak Park 44: Dane Persek’s 19 points paced the visiting Lions (16-9).

In Division 2AA:

Foothill 64, Palm Springs 41: Jacob Horton scored 17 points and Cruz Billings scored 10 with 11 assists for the host Knights (26-2).

Mira Costa 78, Aliso Niguel 57: Tyler Weaver had another productive night for the Wolverines (20-8), scoring 24 points, but they were eliminated by the visiting Mustangs (18-6).

Long Beach Poly 51, Villa Park 43: Vince Albertini scored 17 points in a losing effort for the visiting Spartans (16-9).

Cypress 48, Mayfair 47: Kody Papke scored 13 points with eight rebounds and Jonah Kim scored 12 points with six rebounds for the visiting Centurions (16-12).

In Division 3AA:

Tustin 43, Palm Desert 33: The Tillers (21-8) held an opponent to 40 or fewer points for the 10th time this season. Eli Nyeazi scored 11 points and seven rebounds for Tustin. Wasi Khan added 10 points and five assists for the Tillers.

In Division 4AA:

Garden Grove 50, Golden Valley 49: The host Argonauts (18-8) won a close one as Miguel Ortega scored 14 points and Gabe Garcia added 10.
