Snuggling a pair of eggs in her nest overlooking Big Bear Lake, Jackie, one of the area’s resident bald eagles, seemed unphased by the stormy skies Monday, Jan. 27.
The second egg arrived late Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, just before the weekend storm descended on the San Bernardino Mountains, bringing up to 10 inches of snow in some areas.
Monday morning, a live stream from a web cam trained on the nest showed Jackie settled over the eggs, her 7,000 waterproof feathers protecting them from the cold and snow.
In a social media post, Friends of Big Bear Valley, the group that maintains two web cams that observe the nest and Jackie and her mate, Shadow, said the second egg arrived at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, almost exactly three days after the first.
In 2024, Jackie had her first three-egg clutch, though none of the eggs hatched. If a third egg arrives this year, it could show up anytime between Tuesday and Thursday, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.
