If San Clemente’s boys water polo team surfaces as a contender in CIF-SS Division 1 or reaches the elite Open Division, the Tritons’ undefeated performance last week will be worth remembering.

The Tritons went 7-0 over the week, including a key South Coast League victory and their first title at the Villa Park Classic since 1991.

San Clemente (13-4) edged top-seeded and defending champion Santa Margarita 12-11 in the championship of the Villa Park Classic.

“Great weekend for the program,” Tritons coach Logan Powell said.

Powell praised the play of senior utility player Charlie Child for helping No. 2 seeded San Clemente finish the tournament 5-0.

In the tournament final, junior utility Dylan Medley netted five goals, including the winner with two seconds left.

Senior center Cannon Shupe added two goals and drew two exclusions.

Sharp-shooting senior attacker Micah Wishart scored 16 goals in the tournament.

San Clemente beat Yucaipa 10-8 in the semifinals. In the early rounds, the Tritons sank San Dieguito 23-10, Righetti 15-5 and Pt. Loma 14-12.

Before the tournament, San Clemente collected a 6-3 triumph against San Juan Hills in the South Coast League. Junior goalie Pedro Mattiazo made 15 saves, including three against penalty shots.

The Tritons will play in the Memorial Cup in San Jose on Oct. 18-19 in their final tournament of the regular season.
