NEWPORT BEACH – Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team has plenty of offensive firepower.

It is difficult team to stop from scoring. And it’s equally difficult to score against the Sailors.

Newport Harbor displayed all of that Wednesday in a four-set win over Huntington Beach, 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 25-17, in a Surf League match at Newport Harbor High.

It was a matchup of two of the top four teams in the CIF Southern Section’s Division 1 and 2 combined rankings. Newport Harbor is No. 2, behind Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach, and Huntington Beach is No. 4. Loyola of Los Angeles is No. 3.

When the regular season ends some of the teams in those combined rankings will be placed in the Division 1 bracket and the others will go into the Division 2 bracket.

Newport Harbor outside hitter Riggs Guy had 22 kills. Guy, a senior who signed with UC Santa Barbara, showed his versatility by adding six blocks and 10 digs.

Sailors senior outside hitter Chandler Swanson added 10 kills. Junior middle blocker Jack Berry had eight kills and senior setter Grayson Springborn contributed 46 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Henry Clemo had six kills, four blocks and two aces.

Newport Harbor coach Andrew Mabry liked the contributions from multiple sources.

“This season has been a total team effort,” Mabry said. “We’ve suffered some injuries. We’ve got a couple guys out and we’ve had a couple of other guys respond.”

It was Clemo’s first match with Newport Harbor. He transferred to Newport Harbor from Mater Dei. Because he did not make the residence change that would have made him immediately athletically eligible for the Sailors, Clemo had to sit out the first 50 percent of the days that are in the boys volleyball regular season.

Newport Harbor improved to 18-3 overall and 2-0 in the Surf League. The Sailors’ other league win was over Corona del Mar.

Huntington Beach is 19-3 overall and 1-1 in league. The Oilers got their league win over Edison.

The Sailors, led by Guy’s smashing spikes, led throughout the first set. Huntington Beach, getting great play from Long Beach State-signed setter Jake Pazanit, junior middle blocker Nick Garnier, senior opposite hitter Aiden Dubno and sophomore libero Ivan Hua, kept it close before succumbing in close set that ended 25-23 in Newport Harbor’s favor.

The Oilers were the better team in the second set. They constructed a few runs to win it, including outscoring Newport Harbor 5-2 down the stretch, for a 25-21 win.

“We played well in the first set and got the job done,” Guy said. “In the second set we kind of fell apart a little bit.”

Losing that second set recharged and reassembled Newport Harbor. The Sailors led the third set early 10-1 and went on to a 25-14 win followed by a 25-17 win in the fourth and final set.

“That’s what I love about our team,” Guy said. “We never slow down. We keep coming at you throughout and that’s what got us the win tonight.”

Mabry said, “I thought we did a good job tonight of sustaining our energy level. Huntington played a really good match and they served the ball well.”

Newport Harbor plays at Edison in a league match Friday. The Sailors play Redondo Union on Saturday in the Rocky Ciarelli Invitational, a three-match event at Huntington Beach that has Edison vs. Tesoro at 2:30 p.m., Newport Harbor vs. Redondo at 4:15 p.m., and Huntington Beach vs. Corona del Mar at 6 p.m.
