The last of the 16 Orange County sheriff’s deputies injured when an object unexpectedly exploded during a training exercise in Irvine was released from the hospital over the weekend, and some of the others have returned to work, authorities said on Monday, March 18.
The deputy, who required surgery for a leg injury, was released Saturday and was doing well, sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Parrish said.
Most of the injured deputies complained of dizziness and ringing in their ears. The other 15 deputies had been released from the hospital by the following morning.
Further details about the March 13 explosion and what may have caused it were not available. The investigation was ongoing.

The SWAT deputies were going through an annual joint training with the sheriff’s bomb squad at the FBI Special Agent Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Facility near Irvine Boulevard and Magazine Road when something exploded indoors, officials have said.
