Sophomore Elonzo Santos won two events to help Mater Dei’s boys swimming team place second Saturday at the Mission Viejo Invitational at the Marguerite Aquatics Complex.

Santos touched first in the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 56.50 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (56.71) as the Monarchs tallied 528 points. They placed second to Torrey Pines (683) in the team competition.

Mater Dei received two runner-up finishes from Maddox Johnson. The sophomore took second in the 500 free (4:40.21) and 100 backstroke (53.78).

Irvine’s boys finished fifth. The Vaqueros were paced by Brenden Cook’s second-place touch in the 200 free (1:43.55).

Mater Dei’s girls took third in their team competition with 462 points. Northern California powers Campolindo (700) and Miramonte (512) placed first and second, respectively.

Trabuco Hills’ Eliza Taylor was the county’s lone girls champion by winning the 200 IM in 2:07.83. The Cal Baptist-bound senior placed third in the 100 free (52.47),

Mater Dei’s Alexa Chandler and Tatum Dwyer collected second-place finishes in the 100 breast (1:05.50) and 500 free (5:16.11), respectively.

The meet began Friday with diving.

San Juan Hills’ Taylor Fox and Mission Viejo’s Zach Welsh won the boys and girls competitions with meet-record scores of 587.05 ad 645.70, respectively.

The Texas-bound Fox outdueled Mission Viejo’s Anna Lemkin, a Stanford commit, by about 10 points. Fox broke the meet record set last year by Ella Roselli of Mater Dei (563.60).

The Purdue-bound Welsh toppled the 2013 meet record of El Toro’s Mark Anderson (614.15).
