Despite being buffeted by Tropical Storm Hilary, Oak Glen is open for business during Labor Day weekend.

This weekend is considered the beginning of U-pick apple season in the rustic community that’s nestled in the San Bernardino and Little San Bernardino mountain ranges. Oak Glen is known for its apple orchards, U-pick berry patches and other produce that’s grown there.

Apple season traditionally begins Sept. 1, but wildfires and flooding can affect access to Oak Glen. In 2021, it was wildfires, and in 2022 it was Tropical Storm Kay.

This year Hilary, which hit Aug. 18-19, prompted shelter-in-place orders for residents along Oak Glen Road. Cleanup continues in San Bernardino County.

Currently, businesses report roads are passible but there may be lane closures and detours.

Oak Glen is roughly 30 miles of mountain road below the community of Seven Oaks, which was cut off by the storm with one woman missing after her mobile home was swept away by the Santa Ana River.

Many businesses have been open for weekends during off-season but planned to be open weekdays as well beginning in September. With apple season comes live entertainment and special events such as live music, dinner theater, outdoor activities and shopping.

Oak Glen is not incorporated. Some businesses give addresses in Oak Glen, and some give addresses in Yucaipa, the city down the hill.
