Clippers reserve wing Amir Coffey was arrested early Sunday morning for misdemeanor possession of a firearm after Los Angeles police stopped a vehicle in which he was a passenger.

Shortly before 2 a.m., the police initially stopped the car for speeding, but after smelling marijuana, they searched the vehicle and found a loaded gun inside. According to the police report, Coffey said the gun was his and he was booked into jail for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle.

Coffey was booked on $10,000 bail at LAPD’s Hollywood station jail and was released just after 9 a.m. on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in L.A. County Superior Court in downtown Los Angeles on Aug. 24.

Coffey, who joined the Clippers in 2019 as a two-way contract player, signed a three-year, $11 million deal to stay with the franchise in 2022. He appeared in 50 games last season, starting nine of them, and averaged 3.4 points and 1.1 rebounds.

“We are aware of a legal situation involving Amir Coffey and are looking into it,” the Clippers said in a statement.
