Wen-Tau Yu was still pursuing new goals at 64 years old, his son said in an interview with the New York Times.

Yu immigrated to the United States from Taiwan and had worked as a manager for an agricultural company, his son, Szu Fa Yu told the newspaper.

In retirement, Yu was attending school to become a pharmacist, and was less than a month into the medical program. “I really admire him for that,” his son said.

“His books and notes are still lying around on the desk,” Yu said in the interview. “It’s heartbreaking to see.”

When his father’s friends told the family that Yu never made it to lunch on Sunday, they reported him missing to the police, he said.

On Monday, the Yus were trying to wrap their heads around their profound loss.

“I did not know what to do. I was in shock,” Yu said. “When I first found out, I just could not believe it.”

“Now, the sadness is growing,” he said.

Yu told The Times he wakes up in the middle of the night missing his father.

“I miss his nagging,” he added.
