The Anaheim City Council has received applications from 14 residents interested in being appointed to the dais, many stepping forward in the last day or so before this week’s deadline.

Councilmembers will be considering the appointment at their meeting Tuesday, Jan. 24, and previously set aside Jan. 31 as another opportunity to consider their choice before a Feb. 2 deadline set by the city’s charter that would trigger holding a special election.

It is expected applicants will make a statement at the meeting and then answer questions from councilmembers. The public will also have an opportunity to weigh in.

The appointed person would represent Anaheim’s central-south District 4, which includes the resort area, until November 2024, filling the remaining term left by Avelino Valencia’s election to the state Assembly.

Applications were received from:

Cecil Corken
Alfred Corken
Daniel Dominguez
Steven “Steve” Lee Douglas
Lisa Drake
David Flores
Talab Ibrahim
Norma Campos Kurtz
Mark Lopez
Amira F Mejia Santos
Yudy Morales-Salazar
Linda Newby
Annemarie Randle-Trejo
J. Dean Reynolds

To be considered, applicants need to have lived in District 4 for at least 30 days and be registered to vote.

Councilmembers had asked city staffers to arrange for a survey to get input from community members on what their issues of interest are and what they would like to see in an appointment.

A range of issues and interests were outlined by the 30 or so respondents, including addressing the needs of the senior community, speeding, parking and neighborhood crime issues and the need for affordable housing.
