Youngsters spent Wednesday learning about principles of unity, contributing to your community and creativity while celebrating African and African-American culture during a day-long Kwanzaa event at the Pretend City Children’s Museum in Irvine.

Kwanzaa, which continues through Jan. 1, was represented in art activities that included children drawing themselves into a mural and writing about how they can contribute to collective work and be responsible; learning about the tradition of lighting seven candles to represent the principles of Kwanzaa; and a story time.
