Los Alamitos needed a rally late in the second quarter to tie Laguna Hills at halftime of their Tustin Classic boys basketball game.

That rally continued well into the third quarter in the Griffins’ 60-39 win over the Hawks in the first round of the 16-team tournament at Tustin High.

From halfway through the second quarter through the midpoint of the third quarter Los Alamitos outscored Laguna Hills 19-0. That run turned the Griffins’ 20-10 deficit into a 20-20 halftime score and a 29-20 lead in the third quarter. Los Alamitos outscored the Hawks 22-5 in the third quarter.

Los Alamitos, No. 11 in the Orange County boys basketball top 25, is 10-4. The Griffins play California of San Ramon (9-3) in the Tustin Classic second round Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Tustin High. California defeated Calvary Chapel 59-55 in a tournament first-round game Tuesday.

Laguna Hills (9-6) will play Calvary Chapel (8-7) in the consolation half of the tournament bracket on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Trent Minter led the Griffins with 23 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday. Minter, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward who was on Mater Dei’s varsity roster last season, made 5 of his 7 shots in the third quarter for 10 points. Griffins sophomore guard Samori Guyness scored seven of his 12 points in the third quarter.

“After the first half we picked up the pace,” Minter said. “We were way more aggressive.”

The Los Alamitos press contributed to seven third quarter turnovers by the Hawks, who committed 22 turnover for the game.

Los Alamitos made 23 of its 45 shots for 51 percent. The Griffins were 5 for 12 on 3-point attempts and finished with 12 turnovers.

Laguna Hills was 14 for 42 (33 percent) and 6 for 17 on 3s. The Hawks were 3 for 13 on 3s after the first quarter.

The Hawks were led by senior guard Michael Bichel’s 12 points.

No. 7 Tesoro 74, Westmont 47: Carson Brown’s 21 points paced the Titans (13-2) as they advanced to the second round in which they will play Woodbridge on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Tustin High. Tesoro got 15 points from Jake Bennett and 13 points and nine rebounds from Nathan Draper.

Woodbridge 51, Fairmont/San Juan Capistrano 41: James Schindler scored 12 points and Jaiden Sabino and Yousef Alsaad added nine points apiece for the Warriors (7-9). Kishan Master scored 12 points for Fairmont.

Tustin 46, Laguna Beach 44: Eli Nyeazi scored 14 points with eight rebounds and Josh Birket contributed 11 points for the Tillers (9-4).

In the Anaheim Colony Classic:

No. 24 Newport Harbor 46, Norwalk 36: Dash Bastedo’s 14 points and 11 rebounds led the Sailors (11-4) in a pool-play game. Newport Harbor plays No. 9 Orangewood Academy (11-3) in pool play Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Anaheim High.

In the Desert Holiday Classic:

No. 1 Mater Dei 64, Mira Costa 54: Zach Davidson scored 36 points with 10 rebounds for the Monarchs (9-2) in Palm Springs.

In the Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines:

No. 3  JSerra 52, Archbishop Mitty 48: Sebastian Rancik’s 17 points sparked the Lions (12-1).

In The Classic at Damian:

Liberty/Nevada 85, No. 2 Canyon 68: Brandon Benjamin’s 25 points did not keep the Comanches (11-2) from the loss in the tournament’s Platinum Division.

No. 12 Crean Lutheran 70, St. Bonaventure 63: Kaiden Bailey scored 20 points for the Saints (8-5) in the tournament’s Silver Division.
