Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.
Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Jayden Mojica, San Gabriel Academy: The 6-foot-2 guard played well in the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas last week. He helped his team reach the finals in the Baller TV Bracket, beating Houston’s Second Baptist 49-46 in the semifinals. Mojica scored a game-high 18 points in the the victory. The Eagles lost in the championship to Georgia’s Augusta Christian, 66-63. Mojica averaged 15 points during the tournament and was named to the all-tournament team.
Kelcy Phipps, Bishop Montgomery: Phipps scored 27 points in Bishop Montgomery’s 62-60 win over St. Joseph in the finals of the Mission Prep Christmas Classic. Phipps was selected tournament MVP after averaging 16.7 points in the tournament. Phipps has signed with Portland State..
Yoda Oke, Sonora: He scored 19 points with 18 rebounds and six assists in the Raiders’ 62-49 nonleague win over La Serna. La Serna is the only team to have defeated Canyon, the No. 2 team in the Orange County boys basketball top 25. In Sonora’s previous game, a 68-35 nonleague win over Valencia, the 6-foot-6, 180-pound Oke had 19 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists for Sonora (10-4).
Daniel Hernandez, Arlington: The senior forward tallied five goals and two assists over three matches while helping the Lions win the title at the SilverLakes Winter Classic. Hernandez scored the lone goal to lift Arlington to a 1-0 win over Citrus Hill in the championship match. He registered a hat trick and provided an assist in the opener against Ayala and had a goal and an assist against Santiago. Hernandez has 13 goals and eight assists in 12 matches this season.
Andrew Meadow, West Ranch: Meadow was named MVP of the Platinum Division in the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas. The senior led West Ranch to the Platinum Division title with wins over Mater Dei in the semifinals and Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman in the final. The Boise State commit tallied 18 points and five rebounds in the championship game.
Franklyn Chambers, Jordan: Chambers led Jordan to wins against Cabrillo and Long Beach Poly last week to move into sole possession of first place in the Moore League. Chambers finished with 23 points, four assists and four steals in a 93-56 win against Cabrillo. The 6-foot senior point guard followed that with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists in Jordan’s 86-60 win against Long Beach Poly on Dec. 21. It was the first time the Panthers beat the Jackrabbits since 2009.
