A 32-year-old man was shot and killed by Corona police officers during a domestic disturbance call after the man fired his gun at a police aircraft Friday afternoon, Dec. 9, authorities said.

Officers responded to the 2400 block of Peacock Lane around 2 p.m. and learned the suspect was armed with a firearm and was making comments about shooting his wife and the police, Corona police Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis said.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but he did not comply, Kouroubacalis said. He then fired the weapon at the hovering police aircraft before at least one officer fired in response.

The suspect, identified as Peter Birmingham, was taken to a hospital but died, Kouroubacalis said. Neither his wife nor the officers were injured.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, Kouroubacalis said.

The events unfolded in a residential area in the western part of the city, north and east of Foothill Parkway.
