• Five veteran jockeys, including Daniel Centeno, Javier Castellano, Terry Houghton, Edwin Maldonado and Willie Martinez, have been selected as finalists for the 2023 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. The Woolf, determined by a vote of jockeys nationwide, recognizes riders who demonstrate high standards of personal and professional conduct both on and off the race track and is one of the most prestigious awards in American racing. The winner will be announced in February, followed by a ceremony at Santa Anita.

• Del Mar followed up its record-breaking summer meet with another four weeks of quality racing during its Bing Crosby fall meet that concluded Sunday. The total handle in 2022 was $744.68­ million, a record amount wagered on Del Mar’s races in a non-Breeders’ Cup year. The total handle for the fall meet was $164.85 million with an average daily of $12.68 million, a 4.3% decrease from 2021 when Del Mar hosted the Breeders’ Cup during its fall meet.

• Cody’s Wish, this year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner, was voted the winner of the 2022 Secretariat Vox Populi Award. Created by Secretariat’s late owner, Penny Chenery, the award honors the horse whose popularity and excellence on the track resonated with fans and gained recognition for the sport. In addition to his racing brilliance, Cody’s Wish has a continuing connection with namesake Cody Dorman, afflicted with a rare genetic disorder. The story captured fans’ hearts and many Vox Populi votes.
