Cool weather to make way for showers across Southern California this weekend

A brief period of cool temperatures and calm conditions will make way for a light storm across the region this weekend, bringing rainfall and some snow to the Southland.

Southern California temperatures are expected to stay in the high 50s to low 60s on Friday and Saturday with clear skies as a storm system makes it way south from the San Luis Obispo area, according to the National Weather Service meteorologist James Brotherson.

By Saturday evening, rain totaling about a quarter inch to a third of an inch could touch down over the LA Basin.

Los Angeles County will be the first stop on the system’s path, with about a 30% chance of rain beginning late Saturday afternoon. San Bernardino, Orange and Riverside counties will also see pockets of rain beginning Saturday that will likely arrive in the early evening.

There will also be some snowfall in the mountains above 6,000 feet beginning Saturday, and by Sunday, will also fall over the Santa Ana mountains.

Winds in the mountains will be nothing out of the ordinary, with gusts of about 50 mph beginning Saturday night. But along the coastline, gusts of up to 40 mph could lead to some trees toppling, according to Brotherson.

“The thing about our trees along the coast is that they aren’t built to withstand those kinds of windspeeds,” Brotherson said. “So we might see some branches breaking and even some downed trees.”

The heaviest showers will arrive Sunday morning with one to two inches of downpour expected in Los Angeles and Orange counties and the Inland Empire, Brotherson said. The rain will likely last throughout the day and begin to taper off in the evening, though Los Angeles could receive showers that last into Monday morning.

By next week, skies will begin to clear across the region and temperatures will remain in the low 60s.
