A Huntington Beach motorcycle officer was recovering after suffering moderate injuries in a crash in Long Beach on Wednesday while on his way to work, authorities said on Thursday, Dec. 8.

The officer hit the back of a Scion, whose driver was attempting to make a U-turn in front of him at Bellflower Boulevard and East Atherton Street about 2:30 p.m., Long Beach police spokeswoman Allison Gallagher said.

Both the driver and the officer were traveling southbound on Bellflower when the crash occurred, Gallagher said, with the officer unable to stop before hitting the back of the Scion, Gallagher said.

The driver of the Scion, who cooperated with officers, did not show any signs of impairment, and speed nor distracted driving appeared to be factors in the crash. No arrest had been reported.

Officers riding police motorcycles to and from work are considered to be on duty, Huntington Beach police spokeswoman Jessica Cuchilla said.
