“He’s one of the best gentlemen in the county and one of the exceptional coaches, and a dear friend,” O’Shea said of Bailey.
“I could not be more proud to be part of an Orange County semifinal and I’m looking forward to El Modena joining the Orange County teams in this division (semifinals) …,” O’Shea added. El Modena plays at Bishop Diego in the quarterfinals Saturday night.
The Pumas (7-5) put up 62 points last week in a win over Thousand Oaks but Corona del Mar held them to 14 points for the majority of the second half. A pair of late touchdowns passes by Caron Tyler — to Stacy Dobbins and Tommy Long — made the final margin closer.
O’Shea was pleased with his team’s ability to adjust after giving up a touchdown on the opening drive. The Pumas drove 84 yards downfield capped by a 3-yard run by Tyler.
“We giggle about it, but it takes us literally a series,’ O’Shea said. ” ‘OK, that guy’s a little faster than I thought and that guy is a little bigger than I thought, and oh wait — I have to tackle for real,’ because we don’t tackle to the ground during the week, but it’s kind of the norm. It takes time to replicate what we saw all week.”
The Sea Kings defense recorded seven sacks, two by Brady Sarkisian, and an interception.
The Corona del Mar offense responded with a scoring drive on its opening possession when Rasor hit Jack Loucks on an 11-yard reception.
The Sea Kings forced a punt on Chaparral’s next drive and then took the lead after a 32-yard run by Rasor set up Zach Giuliano for a 5-yard TD catch to make it 13-7.
Ryan Nielsen’s third-down sack forced another punt by the Pumas, and then Corona del Mar went on to strike again, this time on a 60-yard pass from Rasor to Mason Kubichek.
That was one of two touchdown passes by Rasor that went at least 60 yards. The other was a 67-yarder to Cooper Hoch early in the fourth quarter.
Hoch finished with seven catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns while Kubichek had four receptions for 91 yards and a score and Russell Weir added three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.
“Tonight was a good opportunity to get four athletes out on the field against a team that plays heavy man-to-man coverage,” O’Shea said. “We knew we weren’t going to focus on the run game. Last week we ran for 200 (yards) and this week we needed to play catch and our boys did such a good job.”
O’Shea added, “Hats off tonight to Kevin Hettig, our offensive coordinator, and Brian Pearsall (defensive coordinator) for spending 30-plus hours last week to get us in position to be successful.”
The Pumas pulled within six points at halftime. A penalty by the Sea Kings on a missed field goal attempt gave Chaparral another shot at scoring. On the next play, Tyler scrambled to his left and found Dobbins in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard connection.
Dobbins finished with 13 receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
