After the OC Registrar of Voters shared the last election results update of the week on Friday, attorney Ashleigh Aitken remained ahead in the Anaheim mayor’s race, and the leaders in three council races were the same as they were when polls closed on Tuesday.
But with more than 306,000 ballots still to be processed countywide – and an unknown number of those from Anaheim voters – the mayor’s contest and the one for the District 2 council seat look unlikely to be settled until sometime next week.
Aitken was leading a field of four, with more than 2,400 votes between her and second-place candidate Trevor O’Neil, the current councilman from District 6.
In District 2, challenger Carlos Leon was only about 300 votes behind Councilwoman Gloria Ma’ae, who was appointed to the seat last year and hoping to win a full term.
The results in districts 3 and 6 appeared more likely to hold. Orange County Business Council Chief Operating Officer Natalie Rubalcava led opponent Al Jabbar, chief of staff to OC Supervisor Doug Chaffee, by more than 1,200 votes in District 3 on Friday; and in District 6, retired public works director Natalie Meeks was more than 6,000 votes ahead of attorney Hari Lal.
Jabbar said Friday he was holding out hope the results could change as more votes are counted, and he noted that termed-out Councilman Jose Moreno, who will vacate the District 3 seat after eight years, was down by hundreds of votes on election night in 2018, but ended up winning when results were complete.
The OC Registrar of Voters will release updated vote totals every weekday at 5 p.m. until the count is finished.
