A 64-year-old La Habra man pleaded guilty Wednesday and was immediately sentenced to six months in jail for threatening state Sen. Josh Newman, D-Fullerton.
Mark Edmund Halderman pleaded guilty to single counts each of criminal threats, threatening public officials and annoying repeated telephone calls, all misdemeanors. He was also placed on two years of formal probation.
Halderman threatened Newman’s life on Aug. 14, 2021, in a voicemail to the California Franchise Tax Board, Newman previously said.
A constituent of Newman, Halderman was apparently angered at not receiving a Golden State Stimulus Check, the senator’s office said. He appeared in person at Newman’s Fullerton office on Aug. 3, the office said, before making the death threat Aug. 14, a spokesperson added. A series of emails were also sent to Newman’s office.
Halderman was convicted of a felony count of criminal threats in January 2014.
