Two of Orange County’s top girls tennis players are expected to face off Thursday in a clash of Freeway League rivals.

Sunny Hills, featuring sophomore Daniela Borruel, will play at Troy, which is led by senior Nadia Kojonroj. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Both teams are 3-0 in the Freeway League but the anticipated singles showdown between Borruel and Kojonroj will serve as an intriguing subplot.

Last season, Borruel and Kojonroj each earned first-team All-County and All-American honors.

Borruel claimed the CIF-SS individual title en route to being named The Register’s player of the year as a freshman. Kojonroj reached the CIF semifinals but defeated Borruel in the Freeway League finals.

Troy and Sunny Hills aren’t ranked in CIF-SS Division 2 this week. Both squads are expected to be challenged by Division 3 Fullerton in league.

IKEMORI, LEJANO HONORED BY CIF

Marina senior Mika Ikemori and former Yorba Linda coach Rey Lejano were among the honorees at the annual CIF-SS Champions for Character event this week.

Ikemori, the CIF-SS runner-up last season to Borruel, plays through epilepsy and has been praised for her sportsmanship.

Lejano helped build the Mustangs’ program and received multiple nominations for the award, including two from rival schools. Yorba Linda athletic director Jeff Platt called him “the pillar of YLHS tennis.”
