JSerra boys water polo sinks Mater Dei in Santa Barbara Invitational final

Will Schneider scored five goals and goalie Jack Helfer made eight saves to lead JSerra’s boys water polo team past Mater Dei 10-5 in the finals of the Santa Barbara Invitational at Dos Pueblos High on Saturday.

The Lions (5-1) also received three goals and three steals from Johann Thrall and two goals from Bode Brinkema.

As a team,JSerra recorded seven shot blocks.

In the semifinals, JSerra defeated Brunswick of Connecticut 17-8.

Thrall, a senior, scored seven goals while Schneider and Brinkema — both juiniors — each added four goals. Helfer, a senior, recorded seven saves.

In the other semifinal, Mater Dei defeated Loyola 13-6.

The Monarchs’ roster doesn’t include All-County center Carter Loth. The senior recently committed to reigning NCAA champion Cal, where his brother Warren plays.

JSerra is scheduled to play host Mater Dei in the Trinity League on Sept. 29.

In other tournament news, Servite, Brea Olinda and Aliso Niguel won tournament titles on Saturday.

Servite (4-1) captured the Thrills in the Hills tournament. Brea Olinda (7-1) claimed the Ayala tournament while Aliso Niguel (7-1) took the Weisz Cup.

NOTE

Tas Palcza has transferred to JSerra from Huntington Beach and will observe the Southern Section’s sitout period, according to the section website. He will be able to play for the Lions starting Sept. 26.
