Defensive lineman T.A. Cunningham has been denied a hardship waiver from the CIF Southern Section to play football at Los Alamitos, leaving the status of the touted transfer from Georgia uncertain.

Section assistant commissioner and spokesperson Thom Simmons confirmed Friday that Cunningham’s hardship waiver was denied.

The 6-foot-6, 265-pound junior has yet to play for the Griffins (2-2), who defeated Servite 47-14 on Friday.

Los Alamitos athletic director Richard Smith was asked if Cunningham, considering the denial, would observe the section’s sit-out period for transfers and begin to play on Sept. 30. Smith declined to comment Friday.

Griffins coach Ray Fenton also declined to comment when asked the question.

Cunningham’s father Terrance said Friday that the family’s hardship was an unexpected eviction from their residence in Georgia by county officials.

Cunningham holds nearly 60 scholarship offers, according to 247Sports, and is the consensus No. 1 junior defensive lineman in the nation. His offers include USC and UCLA along with Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Georgia.
