Capistrano Valley football’s passing attack too much for Santiago

MISSION VIEJO — Capistrano Valley quarterback Trey Kukuk spent much of Friday night scrambling away from the constant pressure he faced from Corona Santiago’s defense in a nonleague football game at Capistrano Valley High School.

Santiago managed to get some sacks against the highly touted senior QB, but it couldn’t completely stop him.

Kukuk threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns in the Cougars’ 48-14 victory over the Sharks.

After running for four touchdowns in the Cougars’ 45-13 victory over Tustin in Week 0 and passing for all three scores in his team’s 21-7 victory over Sunny Hills in Week 1, Kukuk’s passing performance against the Sharks was his best in terms of yards and touchdown passes.

Putting up those numbers in the home opener was extra special said Kukuk, who helped the Cougars stay undefeated.

“We had a great game plan coming into this one,” Kukuk said. “I knew I wasn’t the most efficient passer in the past couple of weeks and I knew I just needed to calm down and figure it out. (My receivers) kind of did all the work. My aim was to get it to my guys and they made all the plays out there.”

Kukuk kept the Sharks (0-3) guessing by completing passes to six different receivers.

Wide receiver Hunter Napoleon had eight catches for 126 yards, including touchdowns of 32 and 23 yards.

Receiver Hudson Campbell caught four passes for 64 yards, with touchdowns of 13 and 4 yards.

Jack Culver had a 6-yard touchdown reception and made an interception, one of two for the Cougars, which set up a score.

Boston Granda, arguably the fastest player on the field, led the Sharks with 102 yards rushing on 16 carries, with most of the yards coming on a 79-yard touchdown run where Granda simply outran the defense.

Santiago’s other score came on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Talon Gomez to Jimmy Rumsey.

Cougars coach Sean Curtis said his team’s toughest game of the season to this point will come next week in a home game against Newport Harbor, the defending CIF-SS Division 6 champion.

JSerra football defeats Newport Harbor despite blowing another big lead

JSerra of the Trinity League struggled against Newport Harbor but held on for a 28-21 win Friday.

“Obviously they won a CIF championship last year,” Curtis said. “It will be a big test at home. We’re really excited to have that advantage. With our schedule, we’ve got to play good games every week if we want to win. There are no cupcakes on our schedule.”
