Lower-income Metrolink riders could now be eligible for discounts on fares.
Metrolink, the commuter rail system that runs throughout Southern California, is offering a 50% discount on tickets and passes to passengers who have a California Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.
Riders can access the discount at Metrolink station ticket machines with their EBT cards. An alternative form of payment will be needed to purchase the ticket.
“We are grateful to Caltrans for providing the funding to make this program happen,” Metrolink Board Chair Ara Najarian said. “This fare discount advances Metrolink’s commitment to public transportation equity and accessibility across the six counties we serve.”
Metrolink’s Orange County line travels from Los Angeles to Oceanside, with stops in Anaheim, Fullerton, Irvine, San Clemente, Santa Ana, Tustin, and more. Other routes service the Inland Empire, including Riverside, and San Bernardino County.
The discount, made possible by a Low Carbon Transit Operations Program grant administered by Caltrans, went into effect Sept. 1 and will be in place for one year or until the grant funds are exhausted.
“It’s exciting to introduce riders to Metrolink trains,” Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle said. “More people in Southern California will now be able to make vital connections to work, school, family, housing, and more.”
