Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Angela Liu, Santa Margarita: Liu carded a 5-under-par 30 with three birdies and an eagle in a season-opening victory against Aliso Niguel at Aliso Viejo Country Club. In June, Liu won the PGA West Junior Championship in La Quinta.

Ingrid Zahn, South Pasadena: The Tigers are off to a fast start this season. They are 10-1 after going 3-0 last week with a 3-1 win over Flintridge Sacred Heart, followed by three-game sweeps of Claremont and South Hills. Zahn, one of the area’s best outside hitters, is a big reason for the team’s success. She leads South Pasadena with 88 kills. She had 15 kills against FSHA and 12 and 13, respectively, against Claremont and South Hills.

Malena Thé, Chino Hills: Thé registered 48 kills, 40 digs and 10 aces in helping the Huskies capture the championship at the Chatsworth Invitational Tournament. Chino Hills won all nine of their matches in the tournament to improve to 10-0 this season. The 5-foot-8 outside hitter helped the Huskies win a CIF State championship last season and has started her senior year in strong fashion. She leads the team in kills and serve receptions and also ranks in the top three in digs and aces.

Marly Smith, El Segundo: Smith recorded 21 kills and 21 digs in a five-set win over Windward and followed that with 28 kills, six aces and 20 digs in a four-set win over Notre Dame Academy.

Mercedes Sibrian, Mayfair: The senior kicker for the Mayfair football team was 5 of 5 on PATs in a 49-6 win against St. Anthony. Mayfair coach Derek Bedell described her performance as “unreal” and said she was ready for the moment. This is Sibrian’s first year playing high school football. She is a forward on Mayfair’s girls soccer team.

Ava-Marie Lange, Harvard-Westlake: Lange led the Wolverines’ offensive attack last week, tallying 18 kills in 34 attempts, respectively, in three-set victories over Village Christian and Bishop Montgomery. She also led the team in passed balls (30) and had 10 digs in those two matches. Lange is committed to play at Harvard University next fall.
