Senior Andre Medina kicked a 25-yard field goal with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter to lift Mater Dei past host Bishop Gorman 24-21 on Friday in a high school football showdown in Las Vegas, Nev.

The contest highlighted the skills of quarterback Elijah Brown and the young defense for the Monarchs.

Brown, a junior, threw three touchdowns to rally the Monarchs (2-0), ranked second in the nation by MaxPreps.

Bishop Gorman (1-1), ranked No. 6 in the nation by MaxPreps, led 14-7 at halftime and 21-14 entering the fourth quarter.

Brown, who improved to 19-0 as a starter, tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Marcus Harris, who made a diving catch on third-and-21, to tie the score 21-21 with 10:39 left in the fourth period.

Brown also connected with wide receivers Marcus Brown and Jordan Onovughe for touchdowns.

Sophomore outside linebacker Nasir Wyatt helped lead the Monarchs defense with three sacks.

Mater Dei recorded consecutive sacks on Bishop Gorman’s final drive to help seal the victory.

The game was a striking contrast to the Monarchs’ 42-0 triumph against the Gaels in 2018.

Next week, Mater Dei plays at Centennial of Corona (2-0), which beat San Diego Cathedral Catholic 42-7 on Friday. The Huskies are ranked ninth in the nation by MaxPreps.

Mater Dei defeated Centennial 21-16 last season in the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals and went on to claim section and state titles.
