Nineteen migrants aboard a disabled vessel off the coast of Redondo Beach were rescued by Coast Guard crews on Saturday.
Around 9 a.m., watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Los Angeles-Long Beach station received a call about the vessel in distress, officials said. A helicopter rescue crew from Air Station San Diego found the vessel 18 miles west of Redondo Beach. Rescue vessel crews then rescued those on board.
“This case highlights the inherent risks posed to migrants attempting to enter the United States by sea and the dynamic nature of our operations,” Capt. Ryan Manning, the commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, said in a statement.
The group of 19 people were taken from the disabled boat, which was then seized by Air and Marine Operations. Customs and Border Protection agents will process the people on board.
