Two days after a Monterey Park police officer was shot and killed in a parking lot outside a gym in Downey, police have made arrests, authorities announced Wednesday morning, Aug. 10.

Police did not provide details, saying they will do so during a 2 p.m. news conference in front of the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles.

Gardiel Solorio, 26, was identified by authorities Tuesday as the off-duty officer killed outside LA Fitness, at 12070 Lakewood Boulevard, about 3:25 p.m. Monday.

Described as humble, dedicated, selfless and hard-working, Solorio is survived by his parents, siblings and his fiancée, Monterey Park Police Chief Kelly Gordon said Tuesday.

His family described the rookie cop as “tough as nails, but a child at heart.”

He grew up in Bell Gardens and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cal State Los Angeles.

He had just graduated from the police academy in July and started a field-training program with the department on July 25, Gordon said.

“Although his time with Monterey Park was very short, we all knew from the moment we met him that he had the heart of service and was going to be a great officer,” she said.

Investigators followed several leads following the shooting, Downey Police Capt. Scott Loughner said, but he so far had declined to share details about the investigation.
