Tyrod Taylor spells Daniel Jones briefly as Brian Daboll seeks feedback on struggling Giants offense

Brian Daboll replaced Daniel Jones with Tyrod Taylor for one snap during Monday’s Giants practice, giving Taylor his first work of camp with the starters.

The Giants’ head coach wanted to confer with Jones about something after four unsuccessful plays, but didn’t want to hold up practice to do it, the Daily News learned.

So Daboll and Jones talked behind the play as Taylor broke the huddle, rolled to his left and hit Kadarius Toney with a short completion near the left sideline.

Jones went right back in for the next play, subbing out Taylor. But the first-string defense dominated the practice pretty much from start to finish on an oppressively hot day.

Safety Xavier McKinney and corner Adoree Jackson intercepted Jones on a floater and an overthrow, respectively, on passes intended for wideout Collin Johnson.

Leonard Williams and the defensive line yielded next to nothing to Saquon Barkley in the run game. Toney had two drops, plus a third in individual drills, coming off a rest day Sunday.

And tight end Chris Myarick was beaten for pressures or sacks on two straight plays by Oshane Ximines and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Taylor also underthrew one deep ball and was nearly intercepted underneath by impressive rookie linebacker Darrian Beavers.

An optimistic view of the Giants is that coordinator Wink Martindale’s defense has some teeth.

The No. 5 overall pick Thibodeaux looks good. He probably would have had three sacks Monday if this had been live football, including back-to-back coming from Jones’ left side.

Johnson and Darius Slayton both made impressive catches downfield on throws from Taylor while running on the second-string offense, with Johnson continuing his standout camp.

And wideout Robert Foster bounced back from an injury with a strong day while running mostly with the second and third teams.

But Jones’ first-string offense has not had many encouraging days through 10 practices. And the New England Patriots are on deck Thursday night in their preseason opener at Foxboro.

“There’s nothing that we have set in stone right now in terms of, ‘We’re doing this so great.,’” Daboll said Sunday in an honest description of his team’s progress to date. “We have a long way to go. Whether it’s how to rush the passer, blitz pick-up, getting open, catching the ball, covering downfield, different play recognitions, total effort, … coaching staff, substitutions, getting the right guys on the field, getting the calls in quickly.

“I think we’re so far away from where we need to be,” he added, “but that’s usually where most teams are in the beginning of camps. Thirty days away, there’s a lot to work on, which is a good thing. We certainly need it.”

MILLER BREAKS ARM

The Giants have lost tight end Andre Miller to a broken arm, a source confirmed. Miller, an undrafted rookie from Maine, had been working as a tight end and fullback with the first-string offense.

The team is terribly thin at the tight end position, especially with Ricky Seals-Jones missing most of camp and now Miller on the shelf.

Undrafted rookie Jeremiah Hall, a fullback/tight end out of Oklahoma, did catch a pass from Jones on a solid gain over the middle. So he’ll continue to get opportunities behind apparent No. 1 Daniel Bellinger, the rookie fourth-round pick from San Diego State.

Myarick struggled Monday, and Jordan Akins has alternated between making plays and dropping passes in camp.

EZEUDU BACKED OFF

Rookie third-round OL Josh Ezeudu did not practice on Monday due to an undisclosed injury he sustained during Friday night’s practice at MetLife Stadium, where he struggled playing left tackle.

Ezeudu has been working as the Giants’ clear top reserve lineman at both the tackle and guard positions, especially as they’ve lost tackles Matt Gono and Marcus McKethan to injuries.

With Ezeudu out, the title of top reserve interior lineman might go to veteran center/guard Ben Bredeson, who has played better in recent days.

At tackle, the Giants re-signed Eric Smith as a reserve. He practiced Monday but jumped and landed awkwardly on receiver Austin Proehl on one play, and Proehl seemed to be shaken up.

Wideout C.J. Board was tended to by the Giants’ medical staff after landing hard on a diving catch attempt, as well.

OTHER BUMPS AND BRUISES

Wide receiver David Sills, corner Rodarius Williams and linebacker Carter Coughlin also continued to sit out and work on the side with trainers. Azeez Ojulari, wearing a red jersey, looked better running and turning while rehabbing his hamstring on Monday than he has recently. He remains on the non-football injury list. Rookie safety Dane Belton (broken collarbone) is already out of a cast but is out for the foreseeable future. Sterling Shepard, Nick Gates and Matt Peart continue to work on the side in red jerseys while on the physically unable to perform list.
