IRVINE —  Rams star cornerback Jalen Ramsey appears to be on track for the season opener after increasing his training camp workload on Saturday.

Ramsey, who had shoulder surgery in June, participated in his first individual period of the summer and had a personal workout with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris before joining his teammates during 7-on-7 drills. The five-time Pro Bowler took off his pads and helmet for the 11-on-11 portion.

“He did a great job,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “I think we’re really looking at it with him as his own five-day acclimation period. He did a great job yesterday getting some work in before the jog through, got some field work today, did a lot of 7-on-7. I think he’s feeling good. Then we will continue to increase that workload as we go and think it’ll get even more and more once we get back to Cal Lu (Cal Lutheran).”

Ramsey took a hit on the left shoulder from wide receiver Brandon Powell to start the 7-on-7 period, which led to concern from Powell but Ramsey waved him off and continued playing.

“He’s feeling really good,” McVay said. “It’s as much as anything, just kind of getting him back out on the field in a smart way, feeling those pads. I think he was a little irritated that his shoulder pads were a little bit bigger than what he’d like, but he still found a way to make it look really good and thought his movement was good.”

Ramsey’s availability for the Sept. 8 season opener against the Buffalo Bills was in doubt after his procedure late in the offseason, but he’s had many positives in his recovery process. He avoided the physically unable to perform list to start training camp and was allowed to participate in walk-through workouts.

McVay joked that it hasn’t been easy to get the competitive Ramsey to pull-back when he’s on the field.

“That’s part of where you want to be specific in the types of calls that Raheem has,” McVay said, “playing in certain spots where you can kind of keep him out of harm’s way because what makes him great is the instincts take over and he is not thinking about that shoulder.”

CAMP NOTE FROM SATURDAY

Running back Cam Akers had his busiest 11-on-11 period of the summer and delivered a productive performance on the ground.

He received about 10 carries and recorded yards by bursting through holes and making smooth cuts upfield. The Rams have been cautious with Akers, who tore his Achilles tendon last summer, but they finally let him loose Saturday.
