Crews spent more than a day looking for a swimmer who went missing off the coast of Newport Beach over the weekend, but were unable to find any sign of him before calling off their search, U.S. Coast Guard officials said Tuesday.
The person who went missing was described as a 48-year-old man who was wearing blue biker shorts while swimming alone near Corona Del Mar on Saturday. He was supposed to meet a friend at 4 p.m. that afternoon, but never showed up.
Teams searched by sea and air for over 27 hours, but could not locate the swimmer, U.S. Coast Guard petty officer Aidan Cooney said. His identity was not released to the public, and he remained missing as of Tuesday.
“Our search has concluded, pending any further developments,” Cooney said.
