UCI ‘strongly’ encouraging indoor masking but not requiring yet

While some UC system schools are reinstating mask requirements, UC Irvine is still “strongly encouraging” individuals to don face coverings while indoors — at least for now.

UCI spokesman Tom Vasich said the UC system assesses COVID-19 data county-by-county to make masking determinations. And UCI could reinstate a mandate should Orange County’s numbers dictate a need, he said.

“We are strongly encouraging the use of masks indoors — with the word ‘strongly’ underlined,” Vasich said.

Masks will currently not be required during the upcoming June 15 all-university graduation event at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. However, face coverings will be mandated during school-specific indoor ceremonies.

“That’s because each ceremony will have 6,000 people in the room, including parents and other members of the public,” Vasich said.

On Friday, UC Riverside announced it would begin requiring face coverings indoors on campus and in university-owned or operated venues. Masks are also required in health care settings — such as in student health centers or when accessing counseling and psychological services — and on public transit.

The mask requirement is in place through June 13.

UCLA also reinstated a universal indoor mask policy, effective Friday, May 27, due to a rise in COVID-19 cases impacting the campus. Barring an extension, its mask requirement will remain in place through June 15.

UCLA said it will continue its weekly testing requirement for those who live or regularly participate in campus programs, regardless of vaccination status.
