It will be a cool Memorial Day weekend in Southern California with gusty winds and fog already touching down in parts of the region on Friday.
A marine layer lingered well into the afternoon Friday along the coastline, and temperatures had begun to dip into the mid-60s and low 70s thanks to strong offshore winds, said meteorologist James Brotherton with the National Weather Service.
That fog layer will return to the coast on Saturday, with a small chance of drizzle, though the skies are expected to clear by the afternoon.
The National Weather Service warned boaters and beachgoers to exercise caution when in the water, with wind speeds reaching up to 45 mph off the coast.
Moving inland, the weather wasn’t expected to drop as low as the coastal communities but cloud coverage carried over by strong winds to the mountains and valleys in Riverside and San Bernardino counties will bring temperatures into the mid-70s.
The strongest winds of up to 40 mph will blow through on Sunday, according to Brotherton.
Mostly good news on the temperatures, not as warm inland, with afternoon highs near averages on Saturday and Sunday and then slightly above normal on Monday Memorial Day #cawx #socal pic.twitter.com/10uAlMLBoP

In the evening, temperatures will drop into the mid-50s across the region — though coastal communities will start to recover on Sunday.
By Monday, there will be a slight rise in temperatures and skies will begin to clear but a warming trend likely won’t arrive until Tuesday or Wednesday, said meteorologist Mike Wofford.
Coastal communities are expected to return to the mid-70s on Tuesday, and in the low to mid-80s in the mountains and valleys.
