Heisman Lane on the campus of Mater Dei became a bit more distinguished on Tuesday.

Mater Dei added the name of graduate and Alabama junior quarterback Bryce Young to its Heisman Lane street sign in honor of his victory last year as the outstanding player in college football.

The school noted the addition in a homecoming ceremony for Young that included Mater Dei’s other two Heisman Trophy winners: John Huarte and Matt Leinart, both quarterbacks.

Huarte won the Heisman Trophy for Notre Dame in 1964 while Leinart claimed the award for USC in 2004.

Young, the first African-American starting quarterback at Mater Dei, posed for a picture with Huarte and Leinart in front of the Heisman Lane sign, located near a school entrance close to the gym.

Young, a 2020 graduate of Mater Dei, will enter the upcoming college season as a contender to capture a second straight Heisman Trophy, which has only happened only once. Ohio State running back Archie Griffin won the award in 1974-75.

Young also projects to be a high selection in the 2023 NFL draft.
