A 657-acre vegetation fire at Camp Pendleton producing smoke plumes in Southern California was contained Tuesday evening, May 10.
The fire was reported around 4:40 p.m. around the U.S. Marine Corps. training facility’s Romeo 3 training area, east of San Onofre State Beach, said Camp Pendleton representatives in a tweet. The fire was contained at 8:48 p.m., representatives said.
The fire did not threaten any USMC personnel or structures, the base said.

The fire’s smoke was likely visible from the 5 Freeway in parts of Orange and San Diego counties, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Camp Pendleton Fire Department battled the blaze and was patrolling the area throughout the night.
