GARDEN GROVE >> Annika Sogsti was unproductive in her first four at-bats in the Pacifica softball team’s CIF-SS Division 1 first-round playoff game against Great Oak on Thursday at Pacifica High School.

The sophomore first baseman more than made up for it with her final swing of the day.

With Kaniya Bragg on first and two outs in the 11th inning, Sogsti hit an 0-2 pitch into the gap in right-center field that scored Bragg and gave the Mariners a 1-0 walk-off victory.

“We had so many opportunities to score that there was no way I was going to stop her (Bragg),” said Pacifica coach Tony Arduino, who was coaching at third as Bragg raced for home pate. “She’s one of our fastest runners. We needed to end it right then and there.”

Pacifica (25-4), the No. 6 team in the division and fifth-ranked team in Orange County, will take on South Torrance in a second-round game Tuesday at Pacifica.

The Spartans defeated Valencia of Valencia, 13-1, in their first-round game Thursday.

“I did swing at a few bad pitches, but I just really wanted it” Sogsti said of the final at-bat. “She made a mistake and pitched me one that I liked. It was outside but it was over the plate enough and I just went with it.”

Both starting pitchers went the distance and were outstanding.

Sophomore Miali Guachino struck out 11 for the Wolfpack (16-11) and didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning.

The Mariners came close to winning the game in the 10th when they had a runner on third with no outs.

But Guachino got out of it by striking out a batter for the first out, and then caught a bunted ball out of the air and threw quickly to third to double up the runner who had started running home and couldn’t get back to the base in time.

Pacifica sophomore pitcher Brynne Nally, the Cal-Hi Sports state freshman of the year in 2021, allowed seven hits and struck out eight. Nally threw just over 150 pitches, according to Arduino.

The right-hander pitched out of situations with runners in scoring position four times

Bragg, the team’s shortstop, made a crucial play in the field in the fifth inning. She made a diving stop on a ball hit in the hole, and that prevented a runner from scoring from second base.

Mariners catcher Delaina Ma’ae made some fine plays as well.

With a runner on first in the seventh, Ma’ae jumped out from her position to field a ball that had been squibbed a few feet in front of home plate.

The sophomore fielded the ball and then fired to second to retire the lead runner.
