The second weekend of the Coachella Valley and Arts Music festival had another round of special guests for Emo Nite’s Saturday April 23 performance at the Sahara Tent.

Jacoby Shaddix, lead singer of Papa Roach and the group 3OH!3 joined last week’s Emo Nite guests Forrest Kline, lead singer of Hellogoodbye and Tom Higgenson, lead singer of Plain White T’s at the festival’s emo celebration.

This is Shaddix’s first time at Coachella, but he’s performed with Emo Nite before. The first was for their seventh-anniversary show alongside Oliver Sykes, the lead singer of Bring Me the Horizon.

Shaddix said he was stoked to be welcomed by emo fans. The band started in the mid-’90s, and he said they would perform with emo and punk bands alike which developed the band’s affinity for emo music.

“Fast forward years and decades later, we released ‘Scars,’ and it’s embraced by the emo scene,” Shaddix said. “Here we are with a second life.”

The crowd of the packed Sahara tent on Saturday evening roared when Shaddix was invited on stage to sing “Last Resort,” one of the band’s biggest hits.

Shaddix said that the band’s eleventh album “Ego Trip” happened on accident and during the coronavirus pandemic. The band and their team rented out a compound in Temecula, where they lived for a month.

“We left that place really satisfied and inspired,” Shaddix said.

The band met with record labels when they decided they’d do it themselves and founded their own record label, New Noize Records.

“The album plays like a mixtape because it’s stylistically all over the place,” Shaddix said. “We still love what we do, and the record sounds like it.”
